Today is my wedding anniversary. 65MD and I have been married for 12 wonderful years. Our life is far from perfect, but we're in it together and that makes it all the better.
For the past 10 years, we've had to figure out how to celebrate our happiness while respecting the horrible tragedy that befell our country that day. It hasn't been without challenges.
The first couple of years after the towers fell, and I told people my anniversary was September 11, their response was one of almost sorrow for us that our happy day was forever marred. In more recent years, people respond with an attitude that is more like "why would you do that?" Most of the time, now I'll say which anniversary it is first hoping the person will realize that my anniversary came first.
Sometimes, I will jokingly tell people that not every woman gets the whole country to remind her husband that their anniversary is near.
It is a delicate balance to be sure. Happy day to 65MD, and to the rest of the country, a day to reflect and remember the patriotism and bravery of those that lost their lives that fateful day.

my roomates sons bday is sept 11, he was 18 and is special needs so he doesn't understand. and honestly to be very NON pc we (america) need to rethink this industry that has sprung up around 911, tragedy definately, horrible absolutely. but stuff like that happens. until we let it go and give it to God it'll never heal. i dislike the we'll never forget mentality. because we have forgotten ww1, ww2, korea, vietnam, the oklahoma city bombings and dozens of other tragedies. we need to celebrate the triumph of spirit that is america and not dwell on the time we've been brought to our knees..............wow this got deeper than i planned. anyway hope you had a wonderful anniversary hon! xoxoxoxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteOur dearest friend's first child was born minutes before the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, so we've experienced what it's like to celebrate and remember at the same time.

This day will always be a day for you to celebrate. Yes, it is a day of rememberance for our nation. But for anyone to not also celebrate this day if they have cause, that would be tragic.

ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary! I think it is sad that your special day is connected to such tragedy. But I hope that you were able to celebrate it the way it deserves! Because, especially after things like 9/11, it is even more important to celebrate the good things in life! Don't let anyone make you feel bad about celebrating such a wonderful thing as a marriage!
