A Matter of Perspective

Typically 65MD and I eat from the salad plates of our dinnerware set.  It is a relatively new set, so the salad plates are probably the same size as the dinner plates once used by my grandmother.

As I was getting my lunch today, I noticed that all of the salad plates were in the dishwasher.  No biggie, with  just the two of us, we don't run the dishwasher as often.   I just got a dinner plate to use for my lunch.  Since I pre-measure everything, I only had to heat it, put it on a plate and eat it.  It was a good thing that the food was already measured or I could have easily over served myself.  The amount of food on that plate looked minuscule.

It is the same amount of food that I eat every day.  I'm just used to seeing it on a smaller plate.  I ate and am satisfied.  It reinforced to me, how easy it is to lose perspective.  Normal servings on a giant plate seem small. Since I have a hard time leaving food on my plate, I need to be more aware of the size of the plates when I'm  away from home eating.

What is it with plate sizes and dress sizes, huh?

BTW, the dishwasher is running as I type this.

  1. This is a terrific point. We do the same thing and in addition, we only eat with salad forks. It's amazing how much less food will fit on a salad fork, yet it give the illusion of being a huge bite.

Have you noticed that plate sizes in restaurants are getting larger and larger to match the giant portions being served. This adds up to restaurant entrees having three times the calories that they would if serve on normal plates. One more "trick" being played on us and the nation wonders why it is obese!!

  2. I bought new plates not too long ago. I was using some burgundy ones that I found out are a bit larger than my new ones. Any time I had pancakes, I always used the burgundy plate so I could fit 3 pancakes on there, along with my scrambled eggs and turkey bacon. This last time, I used the smaller plate. I realized I only needed 2 pancakes to make me feel happy, not 3. Was it the plate size? Very well could've been! WW always promoted using a salad plate or even flipping your dinner plate upside down and eating off the bottom of a bigger plate's circle (if that makes sense... i know what I'm saying, lol).
